Contribute to the Historic Dover Gates

Our neighborhood entry gates at Chapel Hill Road and Dover Road, which likely were built in 1926, have deteriorated over the years. Despite regular painting and light maintenance, they now need a significant renovation.

Since the estimated repairs will exceed the HVNA maintenance budget we are calling on all HV residents to help fund the extensive repair that will be required to bring these gates back to life, while maintaining their historic integrity. This is a grassroots effort that needs the support of all HV residents.

The overall cost for repairing the gates and improving the surrounding landscaping is being estimated now, but is likely to exceed $20,000. We would like to begin the renovations immediately, however, funding needs to be in place prior to beginning the work.  Each HVNA Board member has already made a meaningful donation to get this project started.

There are several opportunities to contribute:

The Hope Valley Gates are protected historic landmarks, and renovations will have to adhere to Historic Preservation Commission guidelines. Once we have selected a contractor, you will be informed of the start date and what the process might look like.

Thank you for your serious consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,

Your HVNA Board

Hope Valley History - Crown to Club

On Tuesday, November 15th, the HVCC hosted "Hope Valley History - Crown to Club," a presentation by resident Don Stanger. In summary:

Our exploration of the history of Hope Valley will begin with discussion of the original 18th century land grants from England's King George II (our neighborhood was built on this land), continue with exploration of the early days of the Hope Valley Country Club development, and conclude with stories of the families and homes that formed the early foundation of our Hope Valley community.

For those who are interested in having a copy of the presentation, filled with images of historic Hope Valley homes and luminaries, it can be downloaded here.

Contribute to the Northampton Gates

In our effort to build community and define our borders, the HVNA has initiated a project to build entry gates at Northampton Road where it intersects with Old Chapel Hill Road.  This is a grass roots effort that needs the support of all HV residents.

The overall cost for clearing the corners of several trees, preparing footings, constructing the walls and finish work on the exterior, comes in at about $7,000-$9,000. This project is scheduled to begin in August 2016. There are several opportunities to contribute. Thank you in advance for your participation!

More about the gates:

These gates will closely mirror the iconic gates at Dover Road and Windsor Way.  The original entries, designed by renowned architect Aymar Embry II who also designed the HVCC Clubhouse, were constructed in 1926.

“New” Hope Valley is an extension of the original neighborhood development, appearing on 1920’s maps as an “area of future development.”  Similar to our restoration of the historic Hope Valley street signs and the addition of historic design address markers, these new gates will further our goal of achieving a consistent and unified look to all of Hope Valley.

This initiative will benefit all residents of Hope Valley even if you live a mile or more away. It identifies our community in a positive way, defines our entry, and we hope will help enhance property values.  Passing through our historic gates signals entry into Durham’s most prestigious neighborhood.
